Write the same thing two different ways

Express one area with a different base and height, and the two expressions join with an equals sign — out drops a length you had no way of measuring. Counting the same thing two ways may be the strongest single move in elementary geometry. It is also where those surprises come from, the ones where the total refuses to change no matter where you put the point. Often you cannot find a length, yet you can find length times length.
