Area of the lawn?

A hard-level "Area" problem.Even if the path zigzags, as long as its width is the same the answer does not change. The whole problem is spotting that moving it changes nothing.

GivenA 14 m by 8 m plot. The path is 2 m wide, measured horizontally

Area ★★★★☆☆ Area of the lawn? lawn path 14m 8m 2m

Hints

  1. The lawn is split in two by the path, and because the path is slanted both halves are trapezoids. Working them out one by one is painful.
  2. So slide the path to the right — same shape, same size, just moved sideways.
  3. Pushed all the way to the edge, the two pieces of lawn join into a single rectangle. Nothing was added or removed, so the lawn is exactly as big as before.
  4. This rectangle is 12 m wide (the plot's 14 m minus the 2 m path) and 8 m tall.
  5. Now just multiply: 12 × 8

Answer 96m²
