What is the total surface area?

A normal-level "Area" problem. For surface area, do not count six separate faces — see three pairs of identical faces. The same view works for any prism.

GivenA cuboid 5 cm wide, 3 cm deep and 4 cm high

Area ★★★☆☆☆ What is the total surface area? 5cm 4cm 3cm

Hints

  1. There are six faces, but opposite faces are exactly the same shape — so the same area. The blue front and back are the first such pair.
  2. The front face is 5 × 4 = 20 cm², and the back is the same — two of these.
  3. Next the top: 5 × 3 = 15 cm². The bottom matches — two more.
  4. Finally the right side: 3 × 4 = 12 cm², with the left to match. That is all six.
  5. Add the three and double: (20 + 15 + 12) × 2. Much faster and safer than counting six faces one by one.

Answer 94cm²
